What is 3D Secure?
3D Secure is an online payment security technology that aims to reduce online credit card fraud. Online merchants that use the technology display the following logos on their sites:
Do all e-commerce sites use 3D Secure?
No. Online merchants can choose whether or not to use 3D Secure.
Why is there a new 3D Secure?
This European Central Bank initiative aims to reduce online credit card fraud by providing additional security for online purchases. This new version aims to meet the requirements of the European payment services directive (PSD2).

What changes at the time of your online purchase?
From 30 June 2020, your “secret image” will be shown if you use your token to sign in to a 3DS e-commerce site. You can also use your LuxTrust mobile app to confirm your purchases.
How do I receive the single-use code?
Whenever you make a purchase, you can choose to validate your transaction in a number of ways:
- Using your LuxTrust Mobile app
- Using your Token as you usually do when you log in to BILnet and checking that the secret image shown is the one that you had chosen previously for carrying out transactions on BILnet
- Entering a one-time code received by text message (NB: this option will end on 31/12/2020)
Which credit cards can I use with 3D Secure?
You or the bank may register your BIL Visa credit cards with the 3D Secure service.

Can I use 3D Secure with a business or company credit card?
Yes, all BIL Visa credit cards can be registered with 3D Secure.
Can I use 3D Secure with a debit card?
No. 3D Secure does not work with debit cards. It only works with BIL Visa credit cards, which are accepted forms of payment for most online merchants worldwide.
Activation

How do I activate the new 3D Secure?
You have two options:
If you have BILnet access, once you have logged in to BILnet internet banking, go to the Cards menu, select 3D Secure and activate 3D Secure on your BIL Visa credit card with just a few clicks, by signing the activation request using your usual LuxTrust codes. You will be able to use your credit card with 3D Secure online merchants immediately.
If you don’t have BILnet access, all you have to do is go to www.3dsecure.lu and follow the instructions. An activation code will be sent to you by our bank in a few days, and you will be able to complete the activation process at www.3dsecure.lu. -
Do I have to activate the new 3D Secure if I’ve already used the previous version?
Yes, you need to activate the new version of 3D Secure for each credit card you wish to use on a 3D Secure site. -
I didn't receive my activation code in the mail.
You requested the 3D Secure activation of your credit card using the website www.3dsecure.lu and not BILnet.
You should receive a letter containing the activation code. If you have not received this letter within the normal time frame, please contact BIL.
Please note that the activation code is valid for 30 days following the request.
If you request another activation code within this period on the site www.3dsecure.lu, a new activation code will be mailed to you. The first code will therefore no longer be valid. -
I received an activation code but the system won't accept it. What should I do?
Troubleshooting:
- You may have entered the wrong activation code. You have 3 tries before the code is blocked. Verify your code (capital and lower-case letters, numbers). Verify that the activation code corresponds to the credit card displayed on the screen.
- The activation code may no longer be valid (after 30 days). For security reasons, the activation code has expired and you must request a new one.
- The activation may be blocked. In this case, please contact BIL. -
What is the secret image for on a 3D Secure site?
The secret image will appear whenever you confirm an online purchase with your LuxTrust token, to guarantee that you are on a legitimate 3D Secure payment site. -
Can I enter 2 LuxTrust Tokens for the same credit card?
No, only one LuxTrust Token can be entered per card. -
Can I enter 2 mobile phone numbers?
No, only one mobile phone number can be entered per card. -
Can I enter a non-Luxembourg phone number?
Yes, you can enter an international phone number.

Have you changed LuxTrust Token?
You have two options:
If you have BILnet access, go to the corresponding “3D Secure” section in the BILnet Cards menu to make the changes
If you don’t have BILnet access, simply visit www.3dsecure.lu, “My 3D Secure” space in order to add or modify your phone number / LuxTrust Token number.
